Aisha flexes her polydactly (extra thumbs!) paws and thoroughly enjoys being petted while she sits beside you or on your lap! She came to the shelter a little timid, but has really blossomed into a beautiful girl with an incredibly sweet disposition. She loves to be petted as well as brushed. She purrs loudly to let you know she loves you, and will kneed gently into your arms as you hold her. Aisha will make a calm and gentle companion.

    * Declawed

Klowee is a long haired, maybe with some Maine Coon in her lineage. A natural beauty, this elegant lady would be comfortable on any high-fashion catwalk with her long, graceful body and magnificent coat. Look closely at her paws beneath all that fur and you’ll find that she’s declawed. Therefore, Klowee must be a strictly “indoor only” kitty, as she has no defense. This queen of feline whim would rather be basking in the soft, filtered light of a windowsill anyway. Klowee expects all the attention herself and would be happiest as the only cat in a home.

This girl is an amazing 17 pounds! She has been tested for diabetes and found to be in good heath, so just needs a diet and some exercise. There are more ways into Artica‘s heart than through her stomach! She is an affectionate lap cat who loves to be petted and talked to. Listen carefully for her low, rumbling purr of contentment. Artica was declawed by her previous owner. Because she had no defense, she will need to be a strictly “indoor only” cat.

    Kismet

    Date In:  11/30/11

    Age on intake:  2 months

    Breed:  DSH

    Gender: Neutered male

Kismet is the only remaining kitten of the litter. His brothers and sisters were adopted shortly after becoming available, and shelter volunteers think his separation from his sister and brother has made Kismet sad. You see, the other kittens were “fancier” tigers and tuxedos, and like so many shelter animals, poor little Kismet has been overlooked because he is solid black. He is just like every other kitten, though- full of love and play- and his black coat is shiny and beautiful. Kismet is ALL kitten, and enjoys a good romp followed by a nice cuddle. It’s time for Kismet to find a home of his own. Having another kitten or cat who likes to play would be ideal.

    Ava

    Ava

    Date In:  9/28/11

    Age on intake:  7 months

    Breed:  American pit bull terrier

    Gender: Spayed female

Are you looking for a constant, devoted companion? Maybe a Therapy Dog to do community service? A fun dog to train for the sport of Agility? Ava can be any of those things and more!  She is a beautiful blue fawn girl with a joyous exuberance for life!  Ava is playful and smart and needs someone who will be able to devote time to training her as well and give her a lot of attention. Despite her energy, she has a wonderful “on/off switch.” She is a compact little girl, which is a good thing because she could easily become a couch and bed hog!

Ava was first found running as a stray at 7-months old; it’s hard to imagine that no one missed her.  She has captured the heart of volunteers and has become the official greeter at PetSmart adoption clinics. If someone wants to play, she’s all for it! But she is just as happy to plop herself on a lap. She will literally flop into your arms and then roll over on her back for belly rubs. Her tail and her tongue are both dangerous weapons that never stop. When she gets excited from all the attention, her ears and muzzle flush pink!

In additional to her wonderful disposition, Ava is also very smart. She accepted a head collar without a fuss and walks beautifully with it. She has been trained with a clicker and is now beyond learning basic commands and moving on to higher levels of training. Ava thrives on human interaction and is eager to please. Ava is also a lover of children. She interacts very well with kids of all ages, and seems to seek them out. It isn’t uncommon to find a pile of children on the floor, and Ava right in the middle of them. Despite being beautiful inside and out, Ava has been overlooked in the kennel for months due to a misunderstanding of her breed. However, she is a true example of what this breed really is like- loving, loyal, and devoted family dogs. Ava loves everyone and everyone loves her, but she is still waiting for that special person or family to share her love with forever.

Ava when she first came to the shelter.

He is a soft soul that is full of love, and Simeon is anxiously awaiting the day that someone will love him back in the very same way he loved his previous owner. Simeon has a great personality, so there must be other plans in store for him. His eyes say it all- please come take me home!

She is a happy, happy dog who loves to go for long walks. Chablis was recently adopted but then returned because the family said that although she is a wonderful girl, they didn’t have time for her. Like all dogs, Chablis would benefit from training and would most definitely enjoy the bonding time with her new owner. When she went home a few weeks ago, she thought she was starting a new life. Chablis loves people and just doesn’t understand why the love wasn’t returned. Now she’s ready to go home for good.

    Hope

    Hope

    Date In:  12/7/11

    Age on intake:  3 years

    Breed:  American Staffordshire Terrier

    Gender: Spayed female

Hope was rescued from the streets of Schenectady just in time. She was brought to the shelter by animal control- weak, emaciated, dehydrated, and fighting to stay alive. She weighed only 21 lbs; her feet bore the sting of sever urine burns, and ulcers and open sores covered her body. The biggest concern was what kind of damage may have been done to her organs. What kind of neglect this poor door endured to become in this condition, no one will ever know. But someone is responsible for allowing her to reach this state, until she was either abandoned, or she escaped in order to survive.

From the day she arrived, Hope held no grudges against people, even though she had every right to. Less than a month later, Hope has been pronounced in good heath by the vet. She is now a healthy 42 lbs. She could still gain a few more pounds, and she always has room for more love. Throughout her ordeal, Hope spent a number of overnight “vacations” with one of the shelter’s amazing volunteers. She appears to be housebroken and does extremely well in a home. She loves to “de-fluff” toys, but only her own; she won’t touch other belongings. She is very loving and trusting with all people. She is also good with cats and other dogs, but can be dominant around other females. Like all dogs, Hope would benefit from training, but will make a great companion to a very lucky person or family.

Monet is more of an observer, than “one to be heard,” as her name suggests. She is a sweet girl that was picked up from the streets. Like all dogs, she would benefit from obedience training, but even now she is a well-mannered dog. She gets along well with other animals and behaves nicely when taken to off-site adoption clinics.  Monet‘s gentle temperament compliments her drop-dead-gorgeous appearance. She is a prime ambassador for her breed and would make an excellent addition to any family.

Greezer is a large, gentle boy that would make an excellent addition to any family. His blue brindle coat is the unique fine coat typical of the “Old World” pit bulls, but much less common today. He learned how to sit right away, is very food motivated, and his gorgeous, brown eyes have fabulous focus which will make training a breeze. Don’t make him wait too long for a treat though, or being the diplomatic gentleman that he is, Greezer will try to hurry up the process by letting loose some drool from each corner of his mouth. Greezer was found wandering as a stray, and it is hard to imagine why no one claimed him. A wonderful boy with a true gentle giant temperament, he is great with people, kids, dogs, cats, you name it– a dream! He has stolen the hearts of everyone he has met and is going to make one special family very happy!

Eve is overweight but healthy, as all of the cats are tested for diabetes. Eve looks you in the eye, pays attention when you talk to her, and loves to jump on a lap and snuggle in tight…like a bug in a rug. Despite her age and size, Eve is really 10 years young and quite spry. Eve had adapted well to being so displaced after spending her entire life, because she know there must be someone out there who needs to benefit from her love. With a diet and the exercise she’ll get by following her new person around making sure never to lose sight of her, Eve is destined for many more wonderful years. Can she share those years with you?

    Age on intake:  3 years

Earlene is a gentle soul who needs a gentle person with the patience to allow her to blossom at her own pace. Toys don’t seem to interest her, but it’s doubtful she knows what they are! We’re working at that. What we can say is that in the short time she’s been with us, Earlene has lightened up tremendously from the terrified gal who greeted us the first few days. Although she won’t jump into your lap on command, she’ll allow you to pick her up and put her beside you for petting. It takes time for her to build trust in unfamiliar surroundings and she can be skittish around loud noises and commotion. Once you find Earlene’s ‘sweet spot’, all of her fears go away. She’ll lie with her belly exposed, legs outstretched, and her little tongue will come out when you scratch her in just the right way.

Snickers is the sweet mother of all of the “candy kittens.” She was surrendered with five of her kittens from two separate litters. We have no idea how many kids she has had in all, exactly what happened to the others, nor all the fine details of her all-too-common story. We do know that Mama herself is just 2 years old– she had her first litter when she was not much more than a kitten herself– and the dear girl is worn out. Snickers has been the nurturer and now needs to be nurtured. It’s time for this loving mom, whose mothering days are finally done, to find someone willing to give her a chance at the good life she deserves.

Nestle is from the second litter of “candy kittens” born to mom, Snickers. Nestle’s sister, M&M, is the same age and her other brothers and sisters– Rolos, Kit-Kat, and Twix– are from a previous litter. They have been on the waiting list to come to the MCSPCA together and begin a new chapter in each of their lives as they find their furever families. Nestle‘s tiny, white bib and the sprinkling of white on her head, along with her unique green and brown eyes, set her apart from her siblings. True to their names, all of the “candy cats” are sweet and loveable, with  spunky, fun-loving personalities. Their mom did a wonderful job raising two litters of  elegant, poised and confident cats, each of which is waiting to add some sweetness to someone’s life. Perhaps the biggest problem when you come visit is that you’ll find cats are like candy bars– you can’t have just one! Did you also notice that they were brought to the shelter on 11-11-11?

Avalon is a sweet girl with a gentle disposition and a preference for long quiet naps on the couch. No one can be sure what her journey was, but it was likely a long and hard one in a neglectful home. She has had many litters of puppies and is very timid and shy. She was found wandering the streets, most likely tossed aside once she had finished her sole purpose of producing puppies. Despite having every reason to not trust people, she is learning very quickly and is full of love to give back. She is fine with other animals and although submissive, very affectionate with people. Avalon does not ask for much; she loves to be with her people, could use some TLC and will do well in a gentle, loving home.

    Cian

    Cian

    Date In:  8/22/11

    Age on intake:  3 years

    Breed:  Retriever mix

    Gender: Spayed female

Cian first came to the shelter in August and has been adopted and returned 3 times, through no fault of her own.
It is easy to become enamored by her appearance- her absolutely gorgeous red, medium coat, and cute little dappled paws make her irresistible- but she is a high-energy dog that needs a person willing to commit to training her. She needs work on housebreaking and crate-training, as well as obedience.
Cian has been evaluated by two trainers and  both have found her to be a quick study. She is definitely high-energy, but also intelligent and eager to work once someone takes control. She is training on a head collar and accepted it very easily, and settled down nicely with the little bit of discipline. She seems to really want a relationship. She displayed a lot of potential when  tested her on some basic agility obstacles. She would likely be very good as a performance dog or in any other situation where can channel her energy into a “job,” maybe even as a farm dog. Cian really is a great little girl, but she needs the right person to give her a chance. She will certainly pay back ten-fold whomever is willing to put a little extra effort into her. It seems like she was totally ignored in  her life and doesn’t know what to do.
Cian would  also benefit from a foster placement until her furever home can be found. If you are interested in fostering Cian or another dog for the MCSPCA, please e-mail info@mc-spca.org.
