VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES:
The Montgomery County
SPCA is always looking for self-motivated people willing to give some of
their time to the animals
at the shelter.
Currently, we have several ideas how you may be able to help if you have
the time and are willing to do so.
Door Greeters: This person would welcome the public and assist with directions
in the SPCA, and where to find what they
may be looking
for. This person will have some animal handling, as they would remove animals
from the cages for perspective
adopters to
handle and interact with. This person should have a love for animals and
for working with people. Animal breeds
and behavior
knowledge helpful.
Lost &
Found: This person would compare lost and found
reports at the Montgomery County SPCA with animals in the
shelter and
those listed in the newspapers, any calls that come in from an owner looking
for a lost pet or any other media
source. Several
thousands of pets lost each year are never located. In this position you
may be reuniting an owner and a pet
that would not
have happened if not for your help.
Pet Grooming: Several pets each
year seen at the Montgomery County SPCA are in desperate need of a bath and
comb.
This alone could
be the difference between finding a home and not. The Montgomery County
SPCA has a bathing area at the
shelter and
much of the equipment necessary for grooming. Grooming experience is helpful.
Landscapers: Not only is a clean
environment required inside an animal shelter a pleasant and clean exterior
can be the
difference between
someone stopping to see what is available for adoption or not stopping.
Landscaping and lawn care
experience helpful.
Project Assistants: Several times a year the Montgomery County SPCA takes pets
off-site to area businesses or schools.
This person
could help with the setting up of these off-site visits. Be present when
off-site to help with the animals and
adoptions.
Pet Trainers: People who come
to the SPCA looking for a new pet are more likely to pick a pet that is well
adjusted and
well mannered.
If you have some past pet training experience a little training may go a
long way. Teaching a pet to sit in its
kennel rather
than jumping all over the place when someone comes to the gate can make
the difference. Many good manners
can be taught
in a short period of time. The time alone, you spend with an animal can
help them to become a better, well
adjusted pet.
Taking a dog for a walk can not only leash train them but also be the part
of the socialization they may need.
Dog walkers: The SPCA would
like to have our dogs exercised on a daily basis. We would like for each dog
to go for a
walk three times
a day to get their much needed fresh air and one on one time to stretch
and run.
Public Relations/Media Assistants: Every event the Montgomery County SPCA is able to hold requires
advertisement.
With a very
limited budget we are required to rely on public service announcements and
other forms of advertisement. If you
have public
relations or a media background your assistance could make the difference
for a successful event.
Vet Techs: If you are a Veterinarian
Technician or have Vet Tech experience you help is needed.
Kennel Maintenance: Assist current shelter staff with cleaning and caring for
the animals at the shelter. Keeping the kennels
where the animals
are kept clean and sanitary is a priority.
Building Maintenance: We at
the SPCA are always trying to improve the appearance of the shelter. Painting
projects and
other maintenance
projects are always needed.
Adoption Follow-up: When a pet
is adopted from the SPCA we would like someone who would make contact with
the new
pet owners after
they have had time to get acquainted with their new pet. This person will
find out how things are going and if
there are any
problems.
Other: I am sure there are many
other ways volunteers can help us at the SPCA. These are just a few of the
services that we
would like to
provide but do not have the staff available to do so. If you know of something
else you would like to do that is
not listed here
that will benefit the shelter and the pets we handle, please don’t hesitate
to ask. Please understand there is a
very limited
budget for any projects we may wish to undertake however if monies are available
and persons are willing to do
anything to
benefit we will do all we can to assist.
