OUR EUTHANASIA POLICY

General Overview:  Euthanasia Policy

Committed to ending the unnecessary euthanasia of adoptable animals, the Montgomery County SPCA takes the decision to euthanize any animal very seriously.

Our commitment to the adoptable animals in our care means that we are willing to pursue all reasonable efforts in order to provide for their well-being.

Euthanasia is not considered for adoptable animals that have been relinquished to the SPCA.

Euthanasia because of lack of space is not an option.

Animals that are deemed to pose an unacceptable danger to other animals, themselves or the public are candidates for euthanasia.  Animals that are suffering mentally, emotionally or physically may be candidates for euthanasia.

The approval process for any euthanasia at the SPCA incorporates the expert opinion of professional animal experts, animal caretakers, the executive director and the president of the organization.*

*In the event of a medical emergency and/or to alleviate severe suffering, euthanasia may be performed prior to obtaining all opinions or under the guidance of a veterinarian.
